Macroscopic authentication relies on directly observable physical characteristics — shape, size, colour, odour, taste, and surface texture — compared against an authentic reference specimen held in a herbarium or described in an official pharmacopoeial monograph such as the Indian Pharmacopoeia, the United States Pharmacopeia, the British Pharmacopoeia, or WHO monographs. Quantitative measurements (length, width, thickness, recorded in millimetres) and qualitative surface characters (leaf venation pattern, bark lenticel distribution, trichome type, and surface texture) are systematically documented and photographed, providing a rapid, low-cost, first-line screening method, though one that is inherently limited by the natural morphological variability of plant material and its vulnerability to deliberate adulteration with visually similar substitute species.
